Ever heard of Alphabet Soup Learning? Chances are that you haven't heard of the English Learning App made by a fellow STEM student. If it sounds familiar and you can't figure it out, Alphabet Soup Learning started out as a project in the Computer Fair for last year’s Computer Science class and has since been upgraded. The main idea of the app is to teach elementary students the alphabet in a new way. The app utilizes five activities to teach students step-by-step. Additionally, for each letter of the alphabet, there are about six images. These images are then used as the subject of the five different activities. When entering the app, you would start with the first activity, Picture Learning. You would select the type of images you want and then enter the activity. Upon entering, you can use the slider to select the letter, and then you can scroll through the images available for that letter. To view the image better, you can also tap on the image for full screen. The main idea is to get students familiar with the images that they will be interacting with in later activities.
The second activity is called Drawing Learning. Drawing Learning is much like picture learning with using a slider and scrolling through images. Except when you tap on an image, you are able to draw on the image in all sorts of ways. You can also share your creative image when you are done. The main idea of this activity is for students to learn a positive connotation for the images.
The third activity, called Spelling Learning, starts when you select a letter. When you select a letter, the activity will then display all of the images for that letter, one at a time. Each time you will be asked to type in the correct spelling for the name of the image, which you have hopefully learned in the previous activities. By the end of the activity, you will have learned the correct spelling for the names of each image.Activity number four is named Matching Activity. True to its name, you will be shown all of the images for a letter and you will have to match them to the correct names for the images. This activity strengthens the connection you have made from the image and its name to the letter to which it belongs.
Finally, there is Testing Learning. Testing Learning is as you would imagine: you are given a test for a letter, which assesses the knowledge you have accumulated in the previous activities.
Overall, Alphabet Soup Learning combines the ideas of picture and process learning into one app to teach elementary students the alphabet in a whole new way. Interested in the app? Download today at the link below! Version 2.0 is coming to the Apple App store later this month.
